These words become the building blocks for haiku-like poems that serve as keys to unlock sealed areas, help NPCs, and progress the story.

The game progresses through all four seasons, from the hopeful blossoms of spring to the tranquil solitude of winter. Each season changes the landscape and may affect which locations, NPCs, and collectible words are accessible. Take your time with each area and observe everything carefully, as the real puzzle in OKU is the gathering of words rather than their placement.

Movement Abilities

The Monk has five movement abilities that make traversal feel like a form of moving meditation. Wind Riding lets you catch gusts of wind and soar across vast distances. Cloud Walking allows you to step onto clouds and use them as platforms. Water Skimming lets you glide across rivers and lakes. Dashing provides quick bursts of ground speed, and Jumping is the foundational leap that connects to every other ability. Learning to chain these abilities together is the key to reaching hidden areas and collecting everything the world has to offer.

Poetry Composition Basics

Poems in OKU are composed of three stanzas, each built from a line format template filled with your collected words. You start with two default line formats: "as the {noun} {verb}" and "{adjective} and {adjective}." As you progress, you unlock additional templates that offer more complex structures. To compose a poem, select a line format for each stanza, then fill in the blank slots with words from your collection. Choose words that match the thematic requirements of whatever you are trying to unlock or whoever you are trying to help.

Meeting NPCs

Throughout your journey, you will encounter NPCs who need your help. Confirmed characters include Tea Practitioner Nami, the white cat Taiko, and the Disgruntled Fisherman. Each NPC has their own quest that can be completed by composing the right poem. For example, the Fisherman can be cheered up by selecting words that capture the beauty of his surroundings and crafting a verse that lifts his spirits. Make sure to gather a diverse vocabulary before approaching NPC quests, as having the right words available is essential.

Tips for New Players

Explore everywhere and look at everything. Words are gathered through observation, so take the time to examine flowers, birds, water features, and other natural elements. Follow lotus flower trails to discover secret paths. Use Cloud Walking to access areas above the main play space. Do not rush through areas, as the game rewards patience and attention. Finally, remember that your poems will be shared with other players in OKU's asynchronous multiplayer system, so put care into every verse you compose.
